guest performer — violin

Gemma Laing

Gemma is commencing her Master of Music (Performance) degree this year, studying with Associate Professor Goetz Richter. She plans to use the degree to combine her interests in violin performance, research and the music and language of France by looking at the music of French contemporary composer Darius Milhaud. Inspired by her attendance at the Académie Internationale d’été de Nice (July 2007) and lessons with Professors Olivier Charlier and Laurent Korcia, she has aims for further study in France in the near future.
Chamber Music performance has been another of her key interests from the earliest stages of her music tuition in Gosford, NSW. It has provided the opportunity to travel widely in recent years. She travelled twice, as part of the Bloodwood String Quartet, to Asia to represent the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (2006), attended the Emerging Artist’s Winterschool of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and undertook masterclasses with the Borodin and St Lawrence String Quartets. It is with this same ensemble that she will take one of the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Young Australian Concert Artists (YACA) positions to be resident ensemble at the Armidale Regional Conservatorium (September 2008). The Quartet has also enjoyed close collaborations with Australian composers including Elena Kats-Chernin and William Barton.
