Paul Castles


Paul Castles (b. 1984) is a native of Sydney. He studied composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with principal teachers Nigel Butterley, Mary Finsterer, and Michael Smetanin, and graduated in 2005 with Honours I. After receiving a University Postgraduate Award he returned to study with Trevor Pearce and completed his Masters in Composition with High Distinction.

Paul was selected to participate in the 2007-08 Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers Program, and his orchestral piece Aurelian unturning was selected for further performance by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. In the last few years he has also worked with the Sydney Symphony Fellows, Willoughby Musical Theatre Society, Chronology Arts (chronology '07, Quintessential '08, and Playing in Tongues '09) and the Clock Ensemble. He also writes articles and reviews for Arts Hub Australia and Musique Art.

Since moving to New York in 2008, Paul has been a student in the Graduate Music Theatre Writing Program of the Tisch School of the Arts, where he is currently writing a full-length work with English composer Victoria Saxton. He has also been involved with Korean writer Chae-kyung Lee on The Fountain, New York City Centre as an intern, and the New York Composer/Choregrapher/Designer program Gesamtkunstwerk: My Mother is a Fish. Paul's studies in New York have been possible with the generous support of Ars Musica Australis, the Ian Potter Foundation, the Dame Joan Sutherland Fund, the Dorothy Loudon-Norman Paris Scholarship, and the Paulette Goddard Scholarship.
