Lachlan Skipworth

Lachlan Skipworth completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Western Australia, where he studied composition with Roger Smalley and Iain Grandage, as well as clarinet and music education. In 2004, his “Delay Piece I” received national airplay on ABC radio’s “Young Australia” program. His “Delay Piece II” was awarded the Dorothy Ellen Ransom prize for composition, and performed in a program featuring the works of the then composer in residence, Peter Sculthorpe. An Interest in Asian music led him to Japan in 2005, where he studied shakuhachi for two and a half years under Kakizakai Kaoru and revered master Yokoyama Katsuya. He recieved grants towards his shakuhachi study from both ArtsWA and the Australia Council for lessons and to compose a new work. He attended the “Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshukan” summer shakuhachi camp in Bisei, Okayama in both 2006 and 2007. He was a participant in the composition program of the 2007 National Music Camp in Adelaide, where he worked with Graeme Koehne to produce a work for chamber orchestra. In 2008 he commenced a Masters Degree in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium. His music will be performed at the World Shakuhachi Festival in Sydney in July.
