Julian Day

Julian Day is a composer, sound & visual artist and broadcaster based in Sydney.

Described as an “intimate yet epic formalist”, Julian revels in lush and striking sound-worlds that are subject to brute discipline and angular logic.  His music is often about contrast: simple ideas warp into complexity, abrupt motives are balanced with silence, black humour is tempered with genuine warmth.  He is equally entranced by the mysterious alchemy of Bjork, the pristine grace of Morton Feldman and the mindless repetition of Andy Warhol.

He has worked with many leading musicians, including Lisa Moore and Mark Stewart (Bang On A Can All Stars), Dave Longstreth (Dirty Projectors), Mark Dancigers (NOW Ensemble), Genevieve Lacey, Robert Davidson (Topology), The Song Company and Orchestra Victoria.  He was recently commissioned by the MATA Festival in New York and last year won a British Council Realize Your Dream award to pursue further opportunities in London.

Julian also hosts New Music Up Late on ABC Classic FM.
