Hugh Dixon is claimed by both Australia and New Zealand as their composer. Born in Sydney (1927) and resident in New Zealand from age 12 his musical grounding was accomplished in New Zealand, receiving his first musical experience in the school brass band beginning on tenor horn. He was trained as a teacher and self-taught as a trumpeter, working successfully in both fields as a professional musician and a music educator. He obtained a M.Mus. (hons) degree from the University of Auckland after a number of years of part-time study, and an L.R.S.M. and F.T.C.L. for trumpet performance.
As with many composers the bulk of his music has been written (and commissioned) with specific groups in mind. As the founder/conductor of the Auckland Youth Symphonic Band and later the Phoenix Wind Ensemble he made many arrangements and composed some original works for these groups. These include a range of works for horn, various ensembles, brass, strings, choral with piano/or orchestra and for voice with piano and/or instrument. He also responded to requests for new works from his son Michael (horn), daughter Wendy (soprano) and daughter Norine (violin).
